Dr. Alexus Brown is a sociolinguist, storyteller, and creative entrepreneur committed to amplifying Black voices across research, education, and media.

She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh, where her dissertation—“What’s The Deal Forreal: Rap Music’s Sociolinguistic Story”—examined Black language, rhythm, and identity in Rap lyrics. A proud graduate of Tuskegee University, Alexus holds a B.A. in English and brings the same excellence and curiosity to every project she touches.

Alexus also serves as the Senior Social Scientist at the Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP) at the University of Pittsburgh, where she collaborates with scholars and community leaders to advance racial equity through research, curriculum design, and grant development. At Duquesne University, she brings her passion for Black cultural expression into the classroom as an adjunct professor, teaching That’s the Joint: The History of Hip Hop.

She is also the Founder and CEO of Lexycal Multimedia, a creative studio that blends culturally grounded storytelling with graphic design, photography, and strategic consulting. Through Lexycal, Alexus works with artists, organizers, and mission-driven organizations to help them communicate who they are—not just what they do—with clarity and cultural care.

Whether she’s designing a flyer, leading a community workshop, or vibing to her favorite Rap verse, Alexus is always tuned into the power of language, culture, and story.
